Top Ten Nutritional Supplements for Daily Maintenance and Acute Illness

FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS – The addition of Fish-Oil supplements is a part of the overall strategy for heart health which is also one of the best natural ways to reduce inflammation throughout the body.  This is especially important since chronic inflammation underlies many of the chronic diseases we see in people today.   Omega 3s are very important essential fatty acids that we need to live, which are important fats that our bodies cannot manufacture on their own.  Therefore, we need to get them from food sources or supplements.  DOSAGE:  1,000 mg of combined DHA and EPA daily for maintenance.  For people with existing inflammatory or cardiovascular issues: 3,000 mg of combined DHA and EPA daily.

PROBIOTICS – Probiotics are the good bacterial that are essential to the functioning of the body.  Our bodies are in a continuous state of adjustment to balance the bacteria we breath in and ingest.  The bacteria serve to break down foods, promote bowel function, destroy harmful microorganisms and manufacture vitamins for the body.  They are also responsible for proper mineral absorption in the small intestines.  DOSAGE:  1–5 billion organisms daily for maintenance.  10 billion for daily for acute illness.

CoQ10 – This supplement is a coenzyme, which provides the key component of energy that is necessary to optimal heart, blood vessel and cell function.  It is one of the best anti-oxidants for the entire cardiovascular network.  In medical terminology, COQ10 is known as Ubiquinone, which can be found in every cell in the body.  DOSAGE – 50-100 mg daily for prevention/maintenance.  300-450 mg daily for those with cardiovascular disease or other serious illnesses like cancer. 

B-Complex Vitamins – These include B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B 12 (cobalamin), folic acid and biotin.  There vitamins are known for their energy improving and stress reducing effects on the body.  They are also effective in preventing birth defects, cancer, heart disease as well as many more conditions.  Drinking coffee, alcohol, taking certain medications, along with the stressors of today’s society all lead to Vitamin B deficiency.  DOSAGE -50mg – 100mg daily. 

Vitamin D – There has been tremendous research into Vitamin D and the impact of deficiency on health.  D deficiency is a major health risk in many distinct categories that range from osteoporosis, heart disease, arthritis, mental health, diabetes and cancer.  Recent studies have shown that 25% of Americans do not get adequate amounts of vitamin D.  Two of the most important roles of vitamin D are its promotion of calcium absorption and its enhancing ability of bone mineralization.  DOSAGE:  It is generally recommended that people have a vitamin D level of 50 – 80 ng/ml, in order to achieve these levels, I recommend supplementing with 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily.



Arnica – Also known as Arnica montana, this is a homeopathic remedy that effectively relieves the effects of physical trauma such as a fall, blow to the body, sprain or surgery.  It is also very useful whenever the body experiences any type of bruising, aches or soreness.  This remedy helps speed the recovery of a concussion, which is a bruise of the brain, by reducing the swelling of the brain that occurs with this type of serious head trauma.  I recommend keeping Arnica in your first aid kit and medicine cabinet.  DOSAGE – 30C potency, take 2 pellets in your mouth every 15 minutes for the relief of physical trauma.  Two to three doses should be sufficient. 

Arsenicum Album – This homeopathic remedy can effectively relieve the symptioms of food poisoning.  Most bouts of food poisoning come on fast and are unpredictable which is why it is important to have this homeopathic remedy on hand at home and when traveling.  Two common symptoms of food poisoning, vomiting and diarrhea, are usually settled down by taking this remedy.  This remedy is also effective for psychological stress.  For people who suffer from anxiety and worry, causing them to be in a constant state of movement and making rest difficult, this can be a huge aid.  DOSAGE – 30C potency, take 2 pellets in your mouth every 15 to 30 minutes ofre the reliefe of acute symptoms of diarrhea or anxiety.  If there is no improvement within 1 -2 hours discontinue use. 

Ginger Root – Two pesky feelings that come on suddenly and effect many people, both young and old, are are motion sickeness and nausea/vomiting.  Whether from motion sickness or from unspecified causes, feelings of illness and nausea are extremely uncomforatble and warrant having a remedy on hand for treatment.  I recommend having ginger root extract on hand at home and when travelling in case this circumstance arises.  Dosage:  Ginger root is sold in capsules, tablets and tinctures.  They all work equally as well.  250 – 500 mg at time of discomfort or prior to anticipation of discomfort.

NUX VOMICA – I recommend having this remedy on hand for the treatment of Constipation and Flu, although it has many more uses other than these.  For acute situation when you are at home or away on a trip, Nux Vomica is irreplaceable.  It is the most common homeopathic remedy for the treatment of constipation, which is especially probable when traveling.   Nux Vomica leads to faster recovery from the flu, especially if you are feeling the symptoms of chills, nausea and achiness.  DOSAGE – For acute relief of sympotoms, I recommend 30C potency taken every 15 to 30 minues. 

Colloidal silver – This is the closest thing we have in natural medicine to an antibiotic, without the toxicity.  Collodial silver can be used to treat virutally all types of infection, including bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic.  It diretly kills microbes while simultaneously stimulating good white blood cell activity and the production of hydrogen peroxide which destroys infectious agents.  There is concern for antibiotic resistance from being over prescribed and it is better to try this potent option before taking a drug that kills good bacteria along with the bad.  DOSAGE – A product containing 10 parts per million for acute infection can be taken at a dose of 1 teaspoon every one to two waking hours for 5 days. Half this dosage for children and do not take longer than 7 days.
