Living with an Invisible Illness/ Chronic Illness

Living with an invisible illness or invisible disability is something people have a hard time understanding. Most of us grew up believing that if someone was sick or disabled, that they would look and act a certain way.  It is hard to overcome this very narrow view that people have held on to and too often we are met with skepticism and hostility by loved ones, doctors, friends and neighbors.

It is now estimated that 10% of people in the United States have a medical condition which can be considered and invisible illness or disability.  With this high of a statistic within the general population, why aren't people living with chronic illness better understood?

The fact remains that most of the challenges we face are primarily neurological  and immunological in nature.  These symptoms can occur due to chronic illness, chronic pain, injury, birth disorders, etc. and are not always obvious to the onlooker.  Rather than harping on the need for acknowledgment, it is better to focus on what is within our control, and that is simply ourselves.

Being ill requires a huge need for self-compassion.  Instead of nurturing ourselves we often find we are justifying ourselves. Instead of looking after our own emotional needs we are often looking towards others for validation and  understanding.  In the absence of feeling understood,  we often allow our emotions to get the best of us.  We are then left depressed and stressed, which of course makes our conditions much worse.  The series of emotions around our illness creates a sense of worthlessness and a total lack of control.  In truth, the only control we ever have in our lives is our perception of our own reality.

It is time to perceive your reality in a way that serves you.  It is time to over come the anger, frustration and depression in order to give way to a healthy perception of who you are and who you want to be.

Although life throws some unexpected turns and the path into chronic illness is never a journey someone wants to take, it is simply something that you must deal with, it does not define who you are.
