What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is the practice of medicine that embraces a holistic, natural approach to the treatment of the sick.  It is described as holistic because it addresses the person as whole when looking to provide a remedy.

Homeopathic remedies are produced in accordance to the U.S. FDA-Recognized Homepathic Pharacopoeia and are derived from natural sources such as vegetables, minerals or animals.

To better understand how homeopathy works, it helps to look at the THREE principals which guide the area of homeopathic medicine:

The FIRST principle:  Let Likes Cure Likes

The first principle of Homeopathy is also its guiding principle, which states, “let like cure likes.”  This concept dates back to Hippocrates, but was more recently codified by a German physician named Dr. Hahnemann, who conducted experiments on himself as well as participants.  In doing so, he created a system by which to categorize and choose appropriate remedies for patients based on a comprehensive characterization of each individual.  This is why Homeopathy is considered holistic.  The entire individual is assessed and not just a symptom.

In the practice of Homeopathic Medicine, a detailed, comprehensive interview of the patient, called the homeopathic case-taking, is undertaken to reveal the physical, psychological and emotional characteristics and complaints of that individual.  The homeopathic practitioner then finds the homeopathic remedy whose materia medica (drug picture) is the most similar to that of the patient’s characteristic totality.  That homeopathic prescription (the similimum) is given to the patient to stimulate his/her being to heal:  likes cures likes.

The SECOND principle:  The Minimum Dose

The second principle of Homeopathy is that of the minimum dose.  While using proven substances on patients, Dr. Hahnemann observed that, while the patients got well, they also had side effects.  To minimize those side effects, he came upon the idea of potentization.  The concept of potency in Homeopathic remedies remains an integral part of the treatment protocol today.

Homeopathic medicines are prepared through a series of dilutions, at each step of which there is a vigorous agitation of the solution called succussion, until there is no detectable chemical substance left.  As paradoxical as it seems, the higher the dilution, the better the homeopathic remedy works.  So, in following the protocol for proper homeopathic dilution, minimum dose, high potency and minimum side effects are achieved.

The safety of Homeopathy has an enviable centuries old history of its potentized oral medicines among patients of all ages, including babies, children, pregnant and nursing women, and senior citizens.

The THIRD principle:  The Single Remedy

The third principle of Homeopathy is the single remedy.  It is recommended by homeopathic practitioners, that one remedy be tried at a time.  Each homeopathic remedy produces its own unique drug picture and is matched to the sick person having a similar picture.  In taking a single remedy at a time, the results are easily observed, uncluttered by the confusion of effects that might be produced if more than one remedy were given at the same time.

About homeopathic treatment:  Acute and Chronic

There are two main categories of treatment in Homeopathic Medicine, acute and chronic.

Acute treatment is for illness of recent onset, for example, the common cold.  In such an illness, the body might overcome the illness, sooner or later, but the appropriate medicine gently stimulates the body to recover more quickly and efficiently.

Chronic or constitutional treatment is the other main category of treatment.  A chronic disease is long standing or a recurrent health problem.  The length of treatment and the challenge to achieve positive results is affected by many factors, including the nature of the problem, the early health history, the family medical history, the previous treatment, and the person’s inherent constitutional strength.  The goal is to help the person to return to a state of well-being through individualized homeopathic treatment.

Federal recognition of Homeopathic Medicine

Officially recognized under the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the 1965 Medicare Act, and the 1987 FDA Compliance Policy Guidelines, these safe, gentle but deep-acting medicines can be used to treat persons experiencing many kinds of medical conditions.

As is the case with any medical related remedy, it is recommended that individuals discuss their complaint or problem with a qualified medical professional.
